About
I turn data into stories and mountains into memories.
By day, I’m a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst at Stanford University’s School of Humanities and Sciences, where I’ve spent over a decade transforming complex datasets into insights that drive real decisions. By weekend, you might find me on a remote mountain trail with a ham radio, exploring an abandoned mine shaft, or casting a line in the Sierra Nevada backcountry.
The Data Journey
My path through Stanford has been anything but linear. I’ve navigated the intricate world of university finance, led the data pillar for the Graduate School of Business DARC team, and now bring it all together at the Humanities and Sciences Dean’s office. Before Stanford, I cut my teeth at places like Apple, Sun Microsystems, and TiVo—learning early that the best technology solutions come from understanding both the business and the people behind the data.
I’ve worked with datasets that would make your hard drive weep—we’re talking hundreds of terabytes. I’ve wrestled with everything from HIPAA-compliant sensitive data to cloud infrastructure that spans AWS and GCP. I build systems that need to scale, visualizations that need to illuminate, and solutions that need to work yesterday.
My toolkit includes:
- Data Science & Analytics: Python, TensorFlow, SpaCy, NLTK
- Data Wrangling: Web scraping (BeautifulSoup, Selenium), Airflow, ETL pipelines
- Cloud Platforms: AWS, GCP, DigitalOcean
- Visualization: Tableau, D3.js, BusinessObjects
- Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, BigQuery
When the Computer Sleeps
On Two Wheels (Or None)
There’s something about the open road that clears the mind. Whether it’s a quick 15-mile spin on my road bike or a longer journey on my 2005 Harley Davidson Fat Boy through winding mountain passes, cycling and motorcycling keep me grounded and free.
The Workshop
My garage smells like sawdust and possibility. I build things—charcuterie boards with float epoxy that look like liquid glass, hammock stands sturdy enough to trust your afternoon nap to, and custom cabinets that turn unused space into solutions. There’s a satisfaction in creating something tangible that no software deployment can quite match.
Amateur Radio: W6SAL
I’ve been a ham radio operator since 2003, inspired by watching emergency communications in action during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake as a kid. Today I hold a General Class license and operate across HF, VHF, and UHF bands as an active member of multiple radio clubs including the San Jose Simplex Group, Almaden Radio Club, and West Valley Amateur Radio Association. Whether it’s a casual ragchew on the local repeater or emergency communications when cell towers fail, radio keeps me connected to a community that spans the globe—one frequency at a time.
Into the Wild
The outdoors is where I recharge. Hiking and backpacking through the Santa Cruz Mountains taught me lessons I carry into every project: preparation matters, adaptability wins, and the best views require the hardest climbs. My favorite fishing spot—Kennedy Meadows off Sonora Pass—is where the world gets quiet enough to hear yourself think. And yes, I’m that person who gets excited about exploring abandoned mines and old train tunnels. There’s history hidden in those forgotten places.
The Home Team
Family comes first, always. My wife is a powerhouse in commercial real estate for a fortune 200 company, and together we’re raising three amazing humans: one navigating college life, one conquering high school, and one discovering middle school. I’m the flag football coach, soccer sideline cheerleader, and softball scorekeeper who probably cares a little too much about the game.
Scouting
I cut my teeth in Scouting as a kid myself, moving through Cub Scout Pack 204 and Troop 614 in Scotts Valley before football took over my high school years. Decades later, I came full circle—first as a Den Leader, then Scoutmaster, and now Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 233. Teaching scouts to build fires, navigate by stars, and think critically isn’t just volunteer work; it’s investing in the next generation of problem-solvers.
Sports Allegiances
Fair warning: I’m insufferable during football season. The San Francisco 49ers are my religion, the San Francisco Giants are my meditation, and the Oregon Ducks are my chaos. Every touchdown, strikeout, and fourth-quarter comeback matters more than it probably should.
Let’s Connect
Whether you want to talk about building scalable data pipelines, compare notes on the best backpacking routes in the Sierras, or debate the finer points of that last Giants game, I’m always up for a conversation. The best projects—and the best adventures—happen when passionate people collaborate.
Reach out. Let’s build something interesting together.
